Mind Tasking and Change Management
Introduction
Mind tasking applicable to change management as organisational change is less about formal plans and more about how people process, prioritise and juggle new demands mentally.
Some ways mind tasking impacts change management
- Cognitive Load in Change
- Change often overwhelms people because they must juggle:
- their day-to-day tasks (business as usual),
- the new tasks created by change,
- the mental effort of unlearning and relearning.
- Mind tasking recognises that humans cannot easily multi-task complex things; leaders need to sequence and prioritise change tasks, so staff don’t mentally burn out.
- Task Framing
- Before people take physical action, they must mentally rehearse the change, ie “What will my role look like?”, “How do I do this new process?”
- Leaders can help by:
- Chunking change into manageable mental tasks (step-by-step).
- Encouraging visualisation and scenario planning (“imagine how you’ll handle X in the new system”).
- This builds mental readiness before behavioural change.
- Managing Attention
- Attention is finite (during change, distractions such as rumours, uncertainty, new policies, etc. multiply)
- Directing attention to what really matters. For example:
- Communicating the top 3 priorities only, rather than flooding with 20 initiatives.
- Using storytelling to make change memorable, so it “sticks” in the mind.
- Leadership Application
Leaders can use mind tasking by:
- Reducing switching costs (don’t ask teams to “switch back and forth” between old and new systems unnecessarily.)
- Building mental rehearsal time (workshops, simulations, role plays, etc.)
- Aligning with natural cognitive rhythms (introducing complex change in stages, not all at once.)
