Differences Communication styles between Westerners and Asians (including Japanese)

Asians (including Japanese)

“…communications often indirect, using non-verbal cues and contextual understandings. Silence may signify agreement or respect. They value harmony and avoid confrontation to preserve relationships…”

Jessica Sier, 2024

Conversely, Westerners

“…favour direct communications, emphasise clarity and transparency. Openly expressing opinions and asking questions is the norm. Conflicts are more likely to be addressed directly and solutions sought through open discussion…”

Jessica Sier, 2024

Other points (emphasis on Japan)

In some ways Asian countries (especially Japan) are still a closed society; with Japanese having fewer opportunities to interact and/or do business with non-Japanese.

Also, Japan's geographical proximity to China, Russia and Taiwan causes them to have different geopolitical priorities from Westerners.

Furthermore, English is not commonly spoken in Japan, and this makes it hard for Westerners to interact with local people; it is very difficult for non-Japanese to be accepted by the Japanese Society.

Additional problems for Japan include drifting productivity and the world's most rapidly ageing population.

Japanese organisations have a greater focus on sales and employment than on profitability, operating margins, etc.
