Motivation (positive reinforcement at work cont. 3)

Ways to Give Positive Reinforcement to Employees
Introduction
There are many potential workplace reinforcers; the key is to find the ones that recipients regard as of value and is easy to administer.
Tips for effective administration of positive reinforcement (8)
i) individualise and personalise reinforcers (remember everyone is unique and will respond differently, ie
"...Make sure the reward you are using is meaningful to the specific employee..."
Heather S. Lonczak, 2019)
ii) apply reinforcers immediately (once behaviour occurs, reward as soon as possible, ie this results in a better connection and greater impact between the 2 - behaviour and reward; people respond better to immediate gratification)
iii) use various types of reinforces (regularly change the type of rewards so that people don't become disinterested; variety will help reinforce the behaviours)
iv) be specific about the behaviour you rewarding (the recipient need to have a clear understanding of why he/she is being rewarded)
v) avoid linking reinforcement with punishment (if reward and punishment are applied simultaneously, they will become linked and lose their independent impact)
vi) apply reinforcers consistently and frequently (reinforcers delivered often and with consistency are less likely to be extinguished, ie lose their impact)
vii) connect external reinforcement with computerised feedback (this provides a more visible and detailed representation of achievements
"... Positive reinforcement in the form of a computerised graph is useful because it provides another medium in whch behaviours and rewards our cognitive linked..."
Heather S. Lonczak, 2019)
viii) connect external reinforcers with natural reinforcers (as external reinforcers at some point end, it is important for naturally occurring ones to reinforces the makeover; generally
"...natural reinforces have the added advantage of requiring little or no additional effort by the supervised......while the external reinforcers (eg coffee gifts cards) are useful learning new behaviours, these behaviours are more likely to remain reinforcing if decoupling to match the occurring reinforcers (eg self-efficacy and reduce time commitments results from learning a new skill)..."
Heather S. Lonczak, 2019)
