More on Fairness
Introduction
Fairness is based on perception, ie how you see it; this can vary from what is actually happening, ie reality.
If there is a discrepancy between perception and reality, it needs to be handled
"...when it's fair, it motivates us; when it's unfair, it demotivates us or lead us towards unhelpful behaviour. Our desire for fairness carries through all aspects of our life, including the workplace......the greater the perceived inequality, the greater the motivation for the person to try and find a way to restore the balance. How someone does this will vary..."

It is one of the primary domains of social experience that has ethical underpinnings, eg reward and recognition, promotions decision-making, resource allocation, etc
"...research shows focusing on fairness and equity helps create the space for equal opportunity, and a more positive, trust-based, productive and engaged work environment. When employees perceive they are treated fairly, they experience greater job satisfaction, higher levels of motivation, and increased organisational commitment..."

If staff feel they are unfairly treated, it is a strong demotivating force, ie causing discontentment and can drive negative behaviour.
As most reward systems are based upon individual performance, it is easy for the perception of unfairness to develop, eg I do the same work is him or her, yet are paid differently!!!
"...people want to be valued and appreciated for what they do and for that recognition needs to be genuine and fair..."

Need to realise that despite everybody being unique and different in their needs, most people want to be valued, respected and well treated.
NB Fairness is the cornerstone to build trust, loyalty and credibility; people who
"...consistently exhibit fairness in their interactions and decision-making are perceived as more trustworthy and authentic..."

While providing equal opportunities and recognising individual contributions, you need to encourage open dialogue, enabling diverse perspectives to be viewed and handle conflicts and make decisions by applying principles of fairness.
Questions to explore the role of fairness in your workplace
"...- How much effort are you applying to fairness at work?
- What role does it play for you as a leader?
- Where are opportunities to improve?..."
