More on Mental Health
Introduction
It is recognised that having a passion or a sense of purpose is key to good mental health.
These motivations need to be cultivated rather than being regarded as innate to be uncovered, because
"...believing that passion is something you 'find', and as such are unchanging and a matter of destiny, can dent curiosity and do more harm than good..."
Paul O'Keefe as quoted by Lucy Dean, 2024
Ideally the workplace should provide tasks, structure, simulation and environment that keeps people mentally engaged and on track.
Five important daily mental health activities
- Engage in meaningful activities (these provide a sense of satisfaction or joy, and are challenging, not easy)
- Have explicit goals and plans (do things that help you progress towards achieving them)
- Engage in healthy routine (get adequate quality sleep, adequate exercise, eat nutritious food, etc)
- Maintain and enhance social connections (having meaningful conversations, socialising with friends, etc)
- Engage in healthy thinking (treat yourself with respect in your thoughts and have a realistic perspective, be curious, etc)
NB All this involves having a positive/growth mindset.
