(Nudging As Part Of Behavioural Economics Cont. 9)
Ethics in Nudging
Introduction
Nudging is
"...rooted in behavioural economics, political theory and behavioural sciences, nudging relies on our cognitive biases to purposefully design information we are privy to in order to shape our choices. Nudging comes in the form of subtle signals, messages or influences that suggest certain ways to behave......the more obvious nudges are better.....Nudging is also designed to remove friction caused by the cost and effort of thinking that prevents particular actions, a common technique being to set up is a default option..."
Chloe Hava, 2021
It can be as simple as the language or wording used or tone of voice.
Ethical concerns
- nudging needs to be for the good (as nudging is a way to overcome conscious thinking, ie effectively what you are
"...doing is bypassing free will in order to get someone to behave in a way that you want them to..."
Matthew Beard as quoted by Chloe Hava, 2021
Need to consider the primary beneficiaries of the nudge, ie individuals, organisation, community, etc.
- nudging towards a better self (morally more than financially)
- need to get people's consent to nudge (talk to people before introducing a nudge)
